easy breadsticks

The perfect breadsticks, in my opinion, are light, soft, and have a delicious garlicky flavor. These breadsticks are that and more! Easy to make with just a handful of ingredients, you’ll be amazed at how quickly these come together. One easy batch makes 12 delicious breadsticks.

Kitchen Basics

Kitchen Scale

I have only 1 requirement when it comes to baking bread. Use a scale! If you’re American, like me, you may have an aversion to weighing out ingredients. I get it. I used to feel the same way.

But, scales take the majority of guesswork out of baking. Using a single bowl on a scale, you can throw in all your ingredients, pop the bowl under your mixer and have dough rising all in under 5 minutes.

So, get yourself a scale like this one. It’s the one I have. It’s cheap and does the job. What more could you ask for?!

Flour

All flour is not created equal. If you plan on baking, and especially if you plan on baking bread, I highly recommend using a quality flour. Skip generic flours all together and get acquainted with King Arthur Bread Flour.

I use bread flour for all things bread – – sourdough, sandwich bread, buns, etc. I use King Arthur All-Purpose Flour for recipes like pizza or sweets. And for bread when I run out of bread flour! It happens)

If you want to make breadsticks but you only have all-purpose flour, make it and enjoy your breadsticks. But the next time you’re grocery shopping, grab a bag of bread flour and try your hand at these easy breadsticks again, but with bread flour.

Stand Mixer

Bread is pretty basic. And it just takes some kneading to get it all incorporated. This dough uses butter (vegan butter for us), and as such, a mixer comes in handy.

I’ve had a Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer for over a decade and love it. My mom’s is over 20 years old and is still going strong! If you want to make bread on a regular basis, I’d recommend investing in a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment.

Make a few batches first by hand. If you love homemade bread (why wouldn’t you?!) then look into getting a stand mixer. It’s a game changer.

Nice, but Not Necessary

A bench scraper is nice to cut dough into pieces, but you can also just use a knife. Random fact, I love my bench scraper and use it to smooth out frosting on cakes, too!

A bowl scraper is used to get the dough out of bowls without leaving a sticky residue behind. I have one and rarely use it. I find it’s more hassle to grab. For some reason, I don’t mind just using my nails!

Not onto the baking!

How to Make Easy Breadsticks

Step 1

Mix warm water, honey, and yeast in the bowl on an electric mixer.

Step 2

Add in the flour and salt. Place under the mixer with a dough hook and mix until it forms a ball, about 30 seconds.

Step 3

Add in the oil and knead for 5 minutes. The dough should be smooth and elastic.

Step 4

Cover with plastic and let the dough rest for about an hour, until the dough has about doubled in size.

Step 5

Dust your counter with a light coating of flour. Dump out the dough and knead it a few times. Divide the dough into 12 equal portions, about 57 grams a piece.

Step 6

Taking one piece at time, flatten into a rectangle. Roll it into a log, and then pinch the seams. Roll the log between your fingers or along the counter until you reach your desired length, about 6″ – 8″. Place them on a piece of parchment or silicone mat, on a baking sheet. Repeat with all breadstick pieces.

Step 7

Let your breadstick dough rest for about 30 minutes. They won’t double but will just puff up a bit.

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Bake your breadsticks for 12-15 minutes, until they are golden brown.

When they are out of the oven, use a pastry brush to rub olive oil (or swipe a stick of butter across the warm tops) over each breadstick. Then sprinkle salt and garlic powder over each one. I don’t measure. I like to add enough that I can see the spices!

Easy Breadsticks for a Mid-Week Meal

These breadsticks are quick, easy, and delicious. I love whipping them up when we have a rather simple meal of grilled chicken salad or pasta. It really makes the meal feel and taste like home.

I hope you give these a try. Let me know if you have any questions! Thanks for stopping by!
