Kitchen Tools

Scale

Girlfriend, we’ve got to use a scale! Ditch the measuring cups. They are not our friends when it comes to bread. Take the measuring cup challenge. Measure out 1 cup of flour. And then dump it into a scale. How much does it weigh? If it’s a legit 1 cup, it should weigh 120 grams. I bet you it doesn’t. That’s why our bread and cookies are never the same twice.

So, get yourself a cheap scale like this one. For between $10 and $14, you can take the guesswork out of baking.

Flour

I love to save money. I love me some Dave Ramsey. But flour is not the place to save a few bucks.

Skip generic flours all together (take a wild guess how I know) and get acquainted with good quality flour. Take your pick! Try out a few and see what you like.

I love King Arthur Bread Flour and use it for most of my breads like sourdough bread, whole wheat bread, buns, etc. I use King Arthur All Purpose Flour for recipes like pizza and sweet breads. And I use it in place of bread flour when I run out.

If you’re ready to make this easy sandwich bread but you only have all-purpose flour, then go ahead and make it with what you have!

But the next time you’re out, grab some good flour and then make this bread again! You won’t be disappointed:)

Stand Mixer

Making bread is so easy with a stand mixer and a dough hook.

If you decide bread baking may be a weekly occurrence, I highly recommend investing in a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment.

But if you don’t, no worries. You can just knead it by hand. I’ve done it many times! You’ll have stronger shoulders, for sure!

Bread / Loaf Pans

You’ll need a loaf pan for sandwich bread. I used a standard size 8.5″ x 4.5″ loaf pan like this. Any loaf pan will do the trick.

Sandwich Bread Made Simple

Baking bread at home does not have to be difficult or time consuming. Make this sandwich bread a couple of times and you’ll feel like a pro!

If you have any questions, I’m happy to help you along your baking way. Thanks for stopping by!

Equipment

  • 1 sandwich loaf pan

Ingredients

  • 270 grams warm water 1 cup plus 2 tbsp
  • 6 grams yeast 2 tsp
  • 21 grams honey 1 tbsp
  • 480 grams bread flour 4 cups
  • 6 grams sea salt 1 tsp
  • 56 grams butter, cut into pieces 4 tbsp

Instructions

Mix

  • Add warm water, honey, and yeast in the bowl on an electric mixer.
  • Add in the flour and salt. Place under the mixer with a dough hook and mix until it forms a ball, about 1 minute.
  • Add in the butter pieces and knead for 5 minutes, or until all the butter has been incorporated and the dough is smooth.

Rest

  • Cover with plastic and let the dough rest for about an hour, until the dough has doubled in size.
  • Grease your loaf pan with butter, oil, or non-stick spray.
  • Dust your counter with a very light dusting of flour.

Shape

  • Once the dough has risen, dump out the dough onto the floured surface and knead it a few times.
  • Flatten out the dough into a rectangle shape, about as wide as your loaf pan. Roll up the dough into a log. Pinch the seams along the length and the sides. Roll the dough back and forth a few times, and then place the dough, seam side down, in the greased pan.

Rest

  • Cover with a piece of greased plastic wrap and allow to rest, for about 1 hour, until the dough has risen about 1" – 2" above the lip of the pan.
  • Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Bake

  • Remove the plastic and bake for about 20 minutes until lightly golden.
Carefully cover with foil and bake for an additional 5-10 minutes.
You want the inside of the bread to cook through to 190 degrees.

Cool

  • Allow the bread to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes.
(optional) While it cools, take about 3 grams of butter and run it over the top of the bread. The butter will help keep the top soft and moist.
Tilt the bread pan over and carefully dump out the bread onto a cooling rack to cool completely before cutting.
Cut into 8-10 slices and enjoy!
